The History of Waxed Cotton
by Winston Hughes on 01/09/14
Waxed cotton. As common sense may suggest, it is wax and cotton woven together. Here is a quick history lesson about this iconic material that remains used by many hunters, fishermen, farmers and we use it for our some of our hats.
Ancient Mariners Loved Waxed Cotton
Waxed cotton was a huge success when it was introduced commercially by Webster's in the 1920's because of its value to sailors who needed to strengthen their larger sails. The British Empire and Scottish sailing industry were specifically large customers. Waxed cotton has been used to strengthen sails since the 1850's with Egyptian cotton as well as keep them water proof. To say the least, waxed cotton has a past of toughening up many products including rain wear, hats, sails, suits and more. In the 1960's PVC and Nylon were introduced and significantly reduced widespread usage of waxed cotton because of their superior material attributes and a cheaper price tag.
The Modern Uses for Waxed Cotton
These days you'll find waxed cotton in niche retailers because it remains an icon for the world's vast ocean, a symbol for strength and the clear warmth benefits. Today the iconic strength and warmth are not the only characteristics of waxed cotton that appeal to people, the classic appearance are also craved. In fact, the entire American team and the late bad-ass Steve McQueen wore waxed cotton suits in the International Six Days motorcycle trial in 1964. Beyond the appearance, you'll still find waxed cotton on many hunters, fishermen and farmers. It seems the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" remains true with waxed cotton.
