Speedster's 7 Favorite Roads on Earth

by Winston Hughes on 01/09/14

For people who love driving fast, nothing beats the thrill of the open road. Speed limits and traffic jams not only slow down our driving, they shackle the spirit. If you are a speedster who loves nothing more than putting the pedal to the metal and scorching the highway, there are plenty of great roads around the world that let you do just that. Here are seven of the planet’s best roads speed-junkies like yourself recommend for intense driving experiences:

Nurburgring Nordschleife

One of the most interesting driving sites in the world, this 13-mile German loop is actually a toll road, but it also doubles as a racetrack. Simply pay the toll, which is about $30, and take a shot at conquering the speedway. Of course, there are also races organized there, so if you want to try it out, make sure that you are going on a day when there are no scheduled events. This is a spot that is definitely recommended for serious drivers because the turns are no joke.

Highway 6/Highway 50

If you are looking for roads that are usually completely desolate, Utah is one of the better places to find them. One of the most barren stretches is on Highway 50 from Delta to Black Horse, which is a ghost town with no residents. You’ll hardly ever see any other drivers on this stretch of about 100 miles, much less police officers, making it a great place to step on the gas pedal and enjoy the ride.

Highway 93

Leaving Las Vegas doesn’t have to be as depressing as watching the movie of the same name. If you take Highway 93 out of Las Vegas, you have a flat and straight two-lane road with no exits where you can gain some momentum.

Interstate 70

Hey look, it’s our old friend Utah again. I-70 is huge and sometimes busy, but not when going through Utah. It literally might take you a few hours to encounter another vehicle. While there are empty roads galore in Utah, it’s best to stick to the highways since there’s a smaller chance of encountering a cow or some other livestock wandering onto the road.

Great Ocean Road

Let’s head to the other side of the world for a truly different experience. This is an Australian road on which you can definitely burn some rubber, but the scenery is so beautiful that you might not want to try. If you ever hit up Great Ocean Road, rip it first, and then when you are going back over it, cruise and enjoying the unbelievable views all around you.

Route 44

Not all of the great open roads are found on the western side of the country, there are some great ones on the East Coast as well. The best eastern state for hitting the road hard is Pennsylvania, without a doubt. From Coudersport, Route 44 has huge patches of roads that not only don’t have many cars, but also don’t have stop signs, intersections or anything else that can impede on your speed. Take a swift ride through the woods and enjoy some excellent variety in road conditions which make your ride special and unique.

Autobahn

When it comes to speeding on the highway, the Germany Autobahn is the end-all-be-all. Most of the highway does not have any speed limits at all. However, when you do see a speed limit, be sure to acknowledge it in order to avoid ticketing. The Autobahn can get crowded and busy near bigger cities, but there’s tons of free, speed limit-less highway for you to enjoy.

Have you had the chance to experience any of these speedways? What is the greatest drive you've ever taken?
